Shoestring Acacia

Acacia stenophylla

Shoestring Acacia

A graceful weeping tree with long shoestring-like leaves and excellent drought tolerance, ideal for privacy screening.

Hardy to roughly 18-20°F and best in low desert; young trees are frost-sensitive, so protect through the first winters.

AMWUA Notes

Avoid overwatering.

Care Guide

💧Watering

Deep-soak weekly the first year, then only monthly once established; extremely drought tolerant and prone to root rot if overwatered.

✂️Pruning

Train to a strong central leader and thin the canopy to reduce wind resistance and limb breakage in the brittle wood.

🌱Fertilizing

No fertilizer needed; a nitrogen-fixing legume.

🛡️Pests

Few problems; occasional psyllids.

☀️Seasonal Notes

Cream puffball flowers appear in fall and winter; evergreen pendulous phyllodes with seasonal pod drop.

Soil, Feeding & Propagation

🪨Soil

Deep, well-draining sandy or decomposed-granite soil; tolerates caliche and alkaline pH 7.5–8.5 but resents wet clay

💧Drainage

Needs well-drained soil.

🌱Nutrient Needs

None — thrives in lean desert soil without fertilizer.

🌰Propagation

Grown from scarified seed; fast to establish from nursery transplants

📐Spacing

15–20 ft

🌳Roots & Placement

Deep roots are generally non-invasive, but keep 15–20 ft from pools and paving for phyllode and pod drop

Placement Tips

  • Weeping form reaches about 20 ft wide; keep 15-20 ft from pools and patios because it sheds phyllodes and pods.
  • Wood is somewhat brittle, so stake young trees and site away from parking, structures, and high-traffic areas exposed to monsoon winds.
  • Not for tight spaces; give it room to arch and cascade as a xeriscape focal point.
  • Plant in full sun with good drainage; excellent narrow-canopy privacy screen when set 12-15 ft apart.
